Eating & Spending Habits - Connected?
By: Ronda Biffert

Are out of control eating habits and out of control spending habits connected? Suze Orman thinks so. She has predicted the last few "Biggest Loser" winners by their FICO score. She's been right each time except for Danny, who took 2nd place, and the people's choice award. The higher the FICO score, the better chance of winning.

According to research conducted by Harvard Medical School, stressing over money is related to people's excessive eating. In her own studies, Suze Orman found for every $1000 of hidden debt, the person will be 2 pounds overweight. Why? Because often the stress and shame that comes with secret debt leads to "comfort" eating, which is emotional eating.

Danny struggled with a secret gambling problem and racked up $45,000 of credit card debt. He did get help with his problem and successfully became debt free. From there he went on to become a contestant on the "Biggest Loser" and then lost a whopping 239 pounds. He admitted that when he was able to get his life and money under control, he was able to get his eating habits under control, as well.

Over the years I have trained many overweight people and I am highly aware that there can be other issues at play. If a person is out of control with their eating, spending, relationships, etc., there is probably a core problem at the center of it. So you can lose the weight, but if don't take care of your main issue, you may either gain the weight back or trade it for another addiction.

So where do you start? You start by being honest with yourself and asking tough questions. Are you out of control with your finances, weight, clutter, etc.? Do you eat when you aren't hungry? Do you spend money you don't have because it makes you feel better about yourself? Take an honest look and don't be embarrassed to call a counselor for help. Believe me, you are not alone. Once you become free of debt and weight you will feel lighter and happier - and it will show - inside and out!
